The original "Sin City" appellation dates back to 1906 and an area known as Block 16 on First Street between Ogden and Stewart avenues. This sector, as well as the adjoining Block 17, were permitted to sell alcoholic beverages, providing refreshments to railroad passengers and personnel. Prostitutes were quickly rented out of back rooms or upper parts of Block 16 saloons, with the bar taking a cut of their revenue. In 1912, The Arizona Club, one of the first saloons, became a gaming hall. All of Sin City's vices were readily available more than a century ago, long before the era of mobsters with connections to casinos.
